EXPEDITION · PEAK LENIN 7,134M · PAMIR MOUNTAINS

The hardest call on the mountain was to turn around.

Peak Lenin is often called the “easiest” 7,000-metre peak. It isn’t. Its weather is notorious, fewer than a quarter of climbers reach the top, and it is the scene of the deadliest single accident in mountaineering history.

In July 2024, climbing in support of wildlife conservation, I summited Razdelnaya at 6,148m. Higher up, the weather turned fast and we were caught in a whiteout. We descended. Another team pressed on, was stranded on the summit approach and was rescued with severe frostbite. Our team came home safe — and that decision now shapes every expedition I lead.
